There is also the choice of a helical set for road and track day applications. Wide straight cut (spur) close-ratio gears minimise transmission losses and offer a choice of rally, race or drag race gearing. QKE8J re-uses the original EP3/FN2/DC5 bellhousing half of the transmission casing, enabling the retention of the Honda clutch, differential, driveshafts and mounting points. A compact, drum style sequential gearchange mechanism and an open face dog design ensure an ultra rapid, positive gear sequential shift. QKE8J features a replacement Quaife outer gearbox case incorporating an additional support bearing between 4th and 5th gear. Ideally suited to circuit racing, drag racing and rally use it’s designed as a direct replacement for the standard six-speed H-pattern Honda transmission. QKE8J is a 5-speed sequential gearkit for the EP3 and FN2 versions of the Honda Civic Type R as well as the DC5 Integra / RSX. DSG transmissions are typically heavier than a true sequential gearbox due to this though. A DSG is still a manual, synchromesh gearbox, or technically two manual gearboxes in one, and uses two clutches to achieve much faster shift times by pre-selecting the next gear. Sequential gearboxes should not be confused with DSG style gearboxes that are fitted to many new road cars. This allows gear changes to be made with very brief interruption of torque from the engine, which means changes can be made without the need to use the clutch. Sequential transmissions use dog engagement for ultra fast gear changes where a synchromesh engagement would not be fast enough. Sequential transmissions are commonly found on motorbikes, where the action of selecting gear is limited to the next higher or lower gear selecting a specific gear, as is possible in an H-pattern gearbox, is not possible in a sequential transmission. Having pioneered the sequential gearshift in the late 1980’s, Quaife has proactively continued to develop and refine its sequential gearbox technology to improve reliability and to adopt integrated electronic paddleshift systems. Quaife is reactive to external requirements and is constantly evolving its gearbox range to suit market demands. This design retains the original mounting points and driveshafts, and incorporates Quaife's. ![]() The QKE10J retains the original bellhousing of the FK gearbox, but builds upon it with a new Quaife alloy main case. This gearbox is currently running in several racing series in Europe and has very good durability in comparison to its Porsche counterpart. The QKE10J war created as a result of Honda's move to the totally new K20C1 turbocharged powerplant for their FK2 and now FK8 chassis.
